Take for granted

“Good morning.”

Text messages coming from Mark just now. Anna is still sleepy at that time but she forces herself to reply the text with the smile on her face.

“Good morning baby, how are you today ?”

Five minutes. Ten minutes passed. No reply from Mark.

So typical of him. I better go back to sleep again before go to work in couple hours.

 

Another day passed.

“Hey you… Kiss… Kiss…” ~ From Mark.

Anna grabs her phone so fast and reply it right away. Her fiancee is so busy lately. She just cannot think why Mark does not have even a little time to message her during the day.

“I miss you baby. You have been very busy lately :(”

Again, no reply. As always.

 

The reply comes at 3 hours later.

“Yes, I have been so busy.”

Just it.

“You don’t miss me, do you ?”

She hopes that Mark will answer her soon. But she is wrong.

 

It is a sunny day out. Three besties have some chit chat in the afternoon at the coffee shop.

“So Anna, is Mark still busy with his work ?” Jess looks into Anna’s eyes while zipping her coffee late.

“Umm yes, but I know he still cares about me.” Anna nods slightly but she looks like she is not sure about it.

“Anna, if man does care with his lover, he will find some times to talk to you, eager to find out about your feelings and activities each day, no matter how busy he is.” George is starring at her before he continues eating his tuna sandwich.

“I know. But he is already tired during the day, maybe he sometimes falls asleep when he gets home, before he has the chance to contact me.” Anna stands up for Mark.

“If I were you, I would find a better man that can treat you well, Anna. You don’t deserve this.” Jess is trying to open her mind about the situation.

“No, Jess. I’m sure it is just for a temporary. Mark is my fiancee now. We have been together for two years. I believe he will take good care of me when he gets a better job with less paper works like he has now. Actually, I have searched some vacant jobs for him that can give him more flexible working hours, so he can spend more time with me.” Anna is smiling to her two best friends trying to convince them.

“Don’t worry, it’s gonna be alright.”

 

Finally finished this paper works job. I really don’t like it.

Mark prepares to go home. He takes his cell on the desk. There are some texts from Anna.

I will reply her in the morning.

 

“Hey babe, good morning.”

One hour passed. No reply.

Hmm… This is so not Anna.

“How are you sweetheart ?”

Still no reply.

Why is she not replying ? She must be at her work right now. Maybe she gets very busy. I will try again at lunch time.

“Are you busy honey ?”

Lunch time is over. Not even a single reply coming.

“Seriously Anna ?” Mark types the texts to Anna again and sends them.

Sigh. She has been moody again. Whatever. Don’t care.

I won’t contact her for the next couple days. I’m so tired of her crappy mood swings.

 

It has been a week since Mark’s last texts to Anna. Mark finally decides to call her.

“Hello, Anna ? What is wrong with you ?” Mark sounds upset.

“Hello, sorry, who is this ?” Anna’s voice is a bit confuse.

“Don’t play game with me Anna. You’re seriously dumb !” Mark is really upset now.

“But, who are you ?” Anna replies with tone of voice sounded cold.

“Hey, I’m Mark !” Mark is so angry.

“Fine !” He hangs up the phone.

 

When Mark is about to call Anna again, his phone is suddenly ringing.

“Hello, may I speak to Mark, please ?”

“Yes, this is Mark.”

“Hello Mark, I’m Dave from In Health Insurance, we have a vacant position for Sales Manager. We would like to arrange some time for you to do the job interview in our office, if you are interested ?”

“Yes sure. I’m interested.” Mark feels happy to receive the call, but he is wondering how that guy gets his name and contact number from.

“How about tomorrow morning at 8 am ? I will text you our office address.”

“Sounds good. I will be there, Mr. Dave.”

“By the way Mark, I’m really sorry to hear about your fiancee Anna. She got unlucky after she called us about that vacant job in our company. She was the one who referred you to us.”

 

Mark dials some numbers and wait for the other party to pick up.

Pick up Jess, pick up…

“Hello…” Jess is answering.

“Jess, what happened to Anna ?” Mark sounds so worried.

“Oh my God Mark, you didn’t know ?” Jess just does not believe what she heard.

“Just tell me, Jess.” Mark insists.

“Anna had an accident last week. Her head was pretty bad injured inside. The doctors said she is experiencing an amnesia, having a periodic memory loss. They predicts it starting two years ago when she just came into this city until she got the accident. She is recovering her condition in her parents hometown now, since she does not remember anything about living in here.” Jess explains the whole story with sad voice.

 

What ??? So that’s why Anna acting weird when she received the call…

Does it mean…

Mark’s phone is sliding off from his hand to the ground. He cannot sense anything for now.

His heart feels burning inside. Mark cannot think straight anymore. Life is so empty suddenly…
